Sunburst – Fragments Of Creation (2016)

Greece is a hotbed for melodic metal, and Sunburst is one of the hottest bands to be rising from there at the moment. Sunburst was founded in 2010 by members of Black Fate and Paradox (two bands you also should check out) – what attracted me first and most to listen to their debut album Fragments Of Creation was the fact that I heard Vasilis Georgiou’s voice on the Avantasia album – and he sounds astonishingly like Roy Khan (my fav Kamelot singer), as I already remarked in that review.

What will you get with Fragments Of Creation?

If you like Kamelot, Symphony X, Evergrey, Firewind or any band like these you will get a lot … that much said, Fragments Of Creation is a mostly fast paced melodic metal album, power metal of the less symphonic kind. The guitars are definitely thrashy, the shredding is superb, the vocals are powerful and deliver most beautiful melodies.

As to variety, there’s not so much on offer, the progressive elements are limited, but still there at times. Still, Lullaby shows the more balladesk side, a totally not cheesy or boring slower song, Beyond The Darkest Sun is an instrumental in which Gus Drax’s guitar work really gives out flashes of brilliance and synths add sparkle. Keyboards are played by Bob Katsionis by the way, multi – instrumentalist, member of Firewind, Constantine, Outloud, Serious Black, owner of a recording studio and video production company, producer and video director. Check out his solo albums.

To come back from the excursion and to the songs: In Break The Core we get some harsh vocals and Remedy Of My Heart is probably the best track of all the album, more symphonic and more epic than the rest, slight oriental harmonic touches, some rough vocals as well, more proggy than any of the other tracks here, and the one that makes me think of Kamelot most. I love Roy Khan, I love all the albums he did with Kamelot, and this track seems to be so much of a resurrection. I apologize for raving, for me it’s just too good to be true to have found a band like this … brilliance.

I sincerely hope they will go on in that vein, introducing more proggy stuff as time goes on. Sunburst have made quite a name for themselves as a live band too, shared stages with Symphony X and other big names in the genre.
